Tyres used in our quarry operations are joining the circular economy, with their rubber being used in local roads as apart of a trial by Queensland's Sunshine Coast Council.
Known as off-the-road (OTR) tyres, this type of tyre is generally from large-scale vehicles such as dump trucks and loaders used on mining and construction sites with no roads.
Together with the Sunshine Coast Council, the Australian Flexible Pavement Association and Tyre Stewardship Australia we trialled the use of rubber binder from OTR tyres and asphalt to test for optimum performance in different traffic conditions.
"Across Boral, and in regional and rural areas more broadly, we have a high number of off-the-road vehicles, so being able to use locally sourced recycled materials in local infrastructure projects is exciting for Boral and the customers and communities we serve."
Mark Taylor, GM Asphalt QLD.
"Recycled rubber form end-of-life tyres has been used in Australia roads for some time and it's great that we're testing the potential for OTR crumb rubber."
