Bombo is a suburb in Kiama in the Illawarra region of NSW - known for the unusual and Instagram-worthy basalt columns that line Bombo Headland.

For more than 75 years, Bombo Quarry Precinct has played an important role supplying ballast, aggregates and road base across NSW.

Boral owns a quarry on the western end of the Precinct and Transport Asset Holding Entity (TAHE) owns the quarry on the eastern end of the Precinct.

Although TAHE still operate on part of the site, Boral and TAHE are planning for its long-term future and have drafted a Master Plan to bring this iconic location to life.

Cameron McArthur, Development Manager from Boral’s Property team said “We’re seeing the Bombo Precinct as a new village for the Kiama area – to complement the Kiama area and provide housing, community facilities as well as commercial and retail opportunities.”

Boral has experience transforming quarries including the development of the Greystanes Estate (incorporating the former Prospect Quarry and surrounding buffer lands) and former Moorebank brickworks.  These sites now include large scale residential developments (Nelsons Ridge and Georges Fair), an award winning industrial estate and broad open space and conservation areas.

Our Boral Property Group has been working with specialised consultants on the draft Master Plan including urban designers, landscape architects and market research teams.

The team is in the early stages of this multi-year transformation project having just shared the draft Master Plan with the community for feedback.  Information on the project is available at www.unlockingbomboquarry.com.au.

Community members were mostly very positive about the Plan – “It’s a brownfield site and it’s just waiting to be developed in the right way with a really good outcome for the community”

“There is a great opportunity for high-density and affordable housing servicing the residents of this area.”

The next stages will involve submitting planning applications for approval, with a view to commence rehabilitation of the Precinct sometime after 2025.
