The Galston Timber Bridge is one of the last remaining McDonald timber truss bridges in New South Wales. Located in the bushland of Berowra Valley National Park, this heritage-listed bridge has been a crucial part of Sydney’s infrastructure since its construction in 1893.
As part of the ConnectSydney joint venture between Boral, Service Stream, and Johnson Controls, we’re leading a multi-stage restoration project to ensure this iconic bridge remains part of the community for generations to come. The works focus on strengthening the 130 year-old structure while respecting its historical significance and natural environment.
A Bridge Health Index assessment identified urgent structural issues, making restoration essential to preserve both the bridge and the safety of its users. Our team has implemented best-practice techniques to maintain the integrity of the bridge, including:
- Repainting and sealing timber elements to protect against water damage.
- Replacing deteriorated components to strengthen structural integrity.
- Implementing environmental safeguards to protect the surrounding Berowra Valley National Park.
- Installing scaffolding to safely access structural elements while minimising impact on the bridge’s heritage fabric.
The first phase of works, which started in November 2024, has been led by the ConnectSydney Structures and Corridors team, in collaboration with MCM Contractors.
