The Majors Road Interchange Project is a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity and reducing travel times for commuters in Adelaide’s southern suburbs. Jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian Governments, this $120 million project will construct new on/off ramps for the Southern Expressway at Majors Road, supporting approximately 245 jobs per year throughout the construction period.
Construction started in late 2023 and is nearing completion, with the interchange expected to be opened to traffic by the end of 2025.
Project Challenge
Majors Road is a vital arterial road, connecting Lonsdale Road and Main South Road, and currently carries approximately 13,200 vehicles per day. The Southern Expressway, which sees around 74,000 vehicles daily, supports economic activity in Adelaide’s southern commercial and industrial areas and facilitates tourist travel to the Fleurieu Peninsula.
The Majors Road Interchange upgrade aims to connect commuters in Adelaide's southern suburbs with access to the Southern Expressway while minimising environmental impact on Glenthorne National Park and surrounding areas. The bridge expansion over the Southern Expressway from two to six lanes, along with new on and off ramps, will improve access to local facilities including the Sam Willoughby International BMX Facility, and the Southern Soccer Facility.
The project includes widening Majors Road, installing new traffic signals, underground power lines and new drainage systems, and realigning the Patrick Jonker Veloway for better cyclist safety.

Boral's Solution
Boral supplied a range of high-quality construction materials for the project, including Department of Infrastructure and Transport approved concrete mixes (S32Mpa, S40Mpa, S50Mpa), stabilised sand, shotcrete, custom grout mix, piling mix, and various quarry materials (Type C Sand, PM1/20, PM2/20, CT PM2/20). These materials are essential for the construction of the new ramps, road and bridge widening, and other infrastructure improvements.
In a South Australian first, our Technical Services team designed a bespoke ENVISIA® mix with SCMs increased to 47.5%. The use of lower carbon concrete in a triple blend improved sustainability outcomes without compromising performance.
Our proximity to the project site led to superior delivery timeframes and flexibility. Boral's General Manager of Concrete & Quarries in South Australia, Kevin Whelan, said it was "a really exciting project to be part of with ACCIONA, just up the road from our Linwood Quarry and Marino Concrete Plant."
