Potholes are a common problem on roads throughout Australia, caused by a variety of factors such as sub-base failure, inclement weather, heavy traffic, and natural wear and tear. These road hazards can cause significant damage to vehicles and pose a safety risk to drivers and pedestrians. Therefore, it's crucial to address them promptly and effectively.

To repair a pothole, the first step is to thoroughly clean the surface area by removing any loose debris, such as rocks, gravel, and water from the surface of the pothole. By ensuring the edges of the pothole are firm and stable, the repair material can adhere correctly, and the pothole can be filled accurately.

Our Bitupack® solution, which contains a minimum of 20% recycled materials, can be an effective solution in dry conditions. It requires a tack coat to be applied to the surface of the pothole. This is a thin layer of asphalt emulsion that helps to bond the repair material to the existing road surface. After applying the tack coat, the pothole can be filled with Bitupack®. The material should be placed from the centre to the edge.

It is fundamental to ensure adequate compaction using a heavy roller, compaction plate, hand tamper or even by driving over it with a vehicle. Compact the material to the same level as the surrounding road surface when using a road roller or compaction plate. However, if using a hand tamper or vehicle, leave the compacted material 5 to 10mm above the road surface, ensuring the edge of the material is rounded. This will allow for further compaction under traffic.

It is worth noting that while pothole repair in wetter conditions is possible, it is generally considered less effective and may require more frequent repairs. However, if the repair must be carried out in wet conditions, our longer-lasting UltraPatch® solution is recommended. Be sure to sweep all of the water out of the pothole and remove any loose material with a broom before filling the hole with UltraPatch®. This solution doesn't require a tack coat, making it more suitable for wetter conditions. Complete the repair by following the same compaction methods previously mentioned.

As always, it is crucial to ensure that all repair work is done safely and with proper personal protective equipment and traffic control measures in place.
