Coffs Harbour Airport's upgrade boosted aircraft parking capacity from three planes to five.
Boral was contracted to resheet and upgrade the apron and associated taxiways. The project intended to increase the airport parking apron capacity from three to five parking bays, and allow for five free-moving narrow bodied jets to be parked simultaneously. This involved extending the apron, strengthening the pavement, improving the drainage and widening a taxiway.
The project required asphalt to be laid without causing delays to aircraft operations, and with minimal disruption to passengers. The work took 15 shifts to complete and required specialised resources to be sourced from interstate to meet the high quality and logistical requirements. Unique bitumen was trucked from a refinery in Sydney and the asphalt work was scheduled to tie in with civil work undertaken by Coffs Harbour Council. With a proactive approach to project management, the work was completed ahead of budget, exceeded quality requirements, and no safety incidents were recorded.
The asphalt works contributed to Coffs Harbour Airport receiving the Australian Airports Association's Large Regional Airport of the Year Award at the national industry awards in 2017.
