The $1.1 billion Gateway Upgrade North project widened the motorway from four lanes to six between Nudgee and Bracken Ridge in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
Gateway Upgrade North project aims to alleviate the congested motorway that presently carries more than 83,000 vehicles daily and is the key entry point to Brisbane Airport and the Port of Brisbane. The works included reconfiguring and modifying interchanges, building a shared bicycle and pedestrian path and electronic signage.
The technically complex project involved multiple traffic switches and crews working in live traffic conditions, mostly at night. Excavation of the existing pavement, manufacturing and delivery of asphalt was completed in 100 shifts under a maintenance construction process that involved the placement of multiple layers of asphalt (a three-layer minimum). The project started in 2015 and was officially opened on March 15, 2019.
Boral received the Australian Asphalt Pavement Association's Outstanding Project Award – Queensland in June 2019 for our work on Gateway Upgrade North.
